As she asserts her technical knowledge, the atmosphere shifts palpably.

Every line of code was reviewed or written by her. She knew the system inside and out, and Brock was not technical and not listening to the senior technical resource in the room—her.

Panache, stung by her confidence and determination, attempts to reassert his authority with a condescending invitation: "Come over here and let me show you my deck." The command drips with arrogance, and she can feel the all-too-familiar toxicity in his dismissive tone.

All eyes turn towards her, and she remains seated, stone-faced.

Anger surges in her veins, paralyzing her in the swivel chair, her limbs immovable, her lips pressed tightly together as she fights to keep her composure.

The echoes of a past filled with bullying and belittlement resurface, the relentless mocking and dismissal by the men who thought they held power over her, and for a fleeting moment, she feels herself slipping back into that scared little girl.

As Panache attempts to brush off her expertise with a dismissive wave of his hand, she felt the familiar stir of childhood fears bubbling to the surface, like a flood threatening to overrun the levees she'd spent years building around her insecurities.

The same feelings of being belittled by authority, of being overshadowed in spaces where she should have felt empowered.

The boardroom, meant to be a space of collaboration and creativity, has transformed into a battleground, where her experience clashes with his arrogance.

She has been here before.

Her heart races like a frightened rabbit, pounding against her chest, but she knows she must not let him see her turmoil.

The subtle retaliation dressed as "restructuring." The exhausting hypervigilance required to document every interaction, guard every flank, and survive in a territory he'd already marked as his own.

The early morning setting captures a quiet, almost ethereal vibe as dawn begins to break over Los Angeles. Inside an Uber car, a seasoned driver, a man in his late seventies, Korean, an opera singer, it turns out, with gentle wrinkles and wise eyes, is at the wheel.

The soft glow of the dashboard lights casts a warm hue throughout the vehicle. He is wearing a simple casual outfit and a slightly worn baseball cap.

Her floral sleeve tattoos are visible on her arms as she rests them on her lap. The atmosphere within the car feels intimate, almost heavy with emotion, as the driver softly sings an aria from Madame Butterfly in a resonant tenor voice, filling the space with beauty and nostalgia.

A surreal aria perfectly sung just for her, 4:30 AM, before the sun rose over the Pacific coast. A reminder of angels among the brambles and burrs of life, a reminder of her true power.

The outside view through the car window shows the quiet streets of Los Angeles still draped in the hush of early morning, peppered with the faint silhouettes of palm trees against the soft, pastel-colored sky as the sun begins its ascent above the Pacific coast. In the distance, the steady glow of the LAX sign as they approach the airport, almost deserted at this hour.

As she took her seat on the red-eye flight, the exhaustion of the past two days hung heavy on her shoulders like a cloak.

The hum of the airplane engines blended with her thoughts, a constant reminder of the battle she had just fought—and won.

The oppressive encounter with Brock Panache still lingered in her mind, but not because she'd failed. She'd won, and that was the problem.

Men like him didn't forget women who made them look small.

Upon her arrival back East, she steps into the gleaming lobby of the company she had always admired, a sense of exhilaration swelling within her. This place, a significant leap in her career, buzzes with energy, innovation, and promise.

His words hang in the air, heavy and suffocating—something inside her snaps.

Unbeknownst to him, she's been preparing for this very moment.

Drawing from her experiences with Brock Panache and others who underestimated her, she feels the warmth of Lisa's encouragement burning within her. The floodwaters of old patterning begin to recede—not erased, but transformed into a powerful current surging through her.

"I appreciate your concern, but my experience has led me here, and I'm more than capable of driving this project forward," she retorts, her voice steady and unwavering.

The room goes quiet, and Judd's bravado falters slightly, surprise flickering across his face. She continues, fueled by a newfound courage.

"I believe in collaboration and combined strength. Dismissing contributions based solely on preconceived notions only limits the potential of our team.

This time, unlike with Panache, the victory doesn't feel pyrrhic. No targets painted on her back. No exhausting vigilance required. Just the clean satisfaction of competence recognized, expertise valued, leadership welcomed.

Lisa catches her eye from across the room, a knowing smile playing at her lips. This is what healthy power looks like - not the desperate peacocking of a Panache or the space-hogging of a Judd, but the quiet confidence of people who build bridges and ladders through their passion and grit.

The aria from that early morning ride echoes in her mind - angels among the brambles and burrs of life.

She'd honed her voice, she'd learned to claim her space, and with these tools, she stepped into her true power.

The Fire of Rebellion

In life, there are the fires that test us, that call us to more—to move.

Our inner voice screams because the world ignores what is and diminishes dissent so that control persists.

I recall the bumper sticker from the early two thousands that stated "if you aren't mad, you are not paying attention."

Anger is exhausting, but rage is the voice of the eternal flame. The idea is not to live within the rage but to harness the horses of your fury and ride them to action, mad as hell and ready to change the status quo.

Use your rage to enact change. Your rage is the voice of your holy spark.

I live in a country that refuses to protect children in school from gun violence. We point at stereotypes, outside forces, and evil to quash, while men kill our children in schools and churches, and America returns to apathy again and again. Liberals wring their hands while conservatives argue for the rights of gun owners.

Profits and grifting swell to the point of bursting at the seams, and yet we sigh and turn off the propaganda tube, drink another glass of wine, or toss back another anxiety pill and hope one day for a better leader, a better way, an external force that might open the door to a possible future we are too lazy to define.

The Keepers of Darkness

And while we sleep through this nightmare, new shepherds emerge to guide us deeper into darkness, selling passive consumption through strategic manipulation.

Influencers emerge and spend their youthful energy on reinforcing the status quo of millennia, and consumers pivot to buy their new recommendations.

Women on the side of so-called righteousness tell young girls on TikTok to obey the husband they have not yet met and to follow pseudo-religious control schemes devoid of meaning or good, let alone spiritual connection.

The world burns, and we argue for our side even when that side destroys and tortures, if that side is our tribe. Choose creation over sides. While they argue, we build.

We try to explain the pain of living under schemes of oppression to our oppressors, and though they may love us as pretty things, they will never understand. Our fathers, husbands, and brothers seldom take up the mantle and become true allies. This intimate betrayal mirrors and reinforces the ancient institutions that blessed it into being.

From the erasure of women's texts in the biblical canon to the exclusion of women's declarations from our constitutional canon, religious and legal patriarchy have worked in tandem, each lending the other divine and civic authority.

Patriarchy reigns with the blessing of the churches and the states, devoid of women, churches celebrating the erasure of women from the ancient texts to the modern day. This conjoined work serves to oppress and control from the very center of our souls. Under the weight of millennia of control—from our beds to our churches and to the dreams we relinquish to survive—the question erupts from within.

"Is It Time For Something Different?"

Men have claimed women as property and dismissed our minds from the start, erasing our invisible labor that glues the world together. Our birth-giving and our labors of raising children, cooking, and cleaning, so that men might be the geniuses, the artists, the inventors, the leaders, the heroic voices of reason. The same duties are named differently for women: teacher, crafter, mother, and cook. Our pay is less if we are paid at all, even while we raise the next generation alone, undersupported, and demeaned by the societies in which we toil, love, birth, and die.

Our radical ability to push life from and through our very bodies is used against us at every turn, from the ability to decide when we have children to the man who gets to claim us with his name, our servitude bound in a document of marriage.

The con is sold to girls from infancy, put on your princess dress and be as tiny and meek as you can—a prince will come by and you won't have to think again. The allure to be compliant is strong when the possible futures laid out for you are so few. Compliance is good and anger is bad, for girls and women, we are told.

All the while, women are told we must wait. Patience is a virtue, the line we must swallow as we submit to perpetual systems of control.

Change is A Breaking Wave

In this moment of change, many name technology as the threat, the disruptor, the thing to fear. But technology is not the oppressor—it merely amplifies the intentions of those who wield its potential.

Time is a wheel that moves us imperceptibly. The small life of humans is a minuscule speck in the cosmic continuum, and when our false sense of control feels threatened by big change, we humans have an instinct we return to: fear.

I am more afraid of humans than I am of technology.

Technology is a tool; humans have wrath, vengeance, and small egos they need to prop up by standing on the necks of the people that threaten their little scrap of status, reputation, and dominance.

If you have never had to fight for what you have and what you need, you cannot know the rage and pain of those who have.

We are that fire—passed from mother to daughter, from woman to woman, unextinguished through millennia. The men who love us must be strong enough to hold our fire so they too can grow beyond the tired tropes of masculinity so limiting as to suffocate the full breadth of humanity into a cast shadow of manhood, two-dimensional and disconnected from the world we need to share.

Calling All Allies

An invitation from complicity to alliance is the door that is always open, even when ignored so long that the hinges rust and the memory of hope fades. Allyship between the forces of change, between the oppressed and those empowered through chromosomes to change the standard is on offer for all who are brave enough to say, as a man, SHE is right, SHE is in charge, hey fellas, let's listen to what SHE has to say. The first step toward alliance is acknowledging where we stand in the machinery of control. If you have the upper hand, but don't know it, ignorance is no longer a refuge for you. Brother, you have been notified.

The tides of change become swelling seas, devouring one way or another what was, in turn for what may come. The space between, when the tide recedes, is the space of emergent possibility.

In the tumult of unrest and unease, when global forces lean predictably into the old, fearful, man-made systems of fascism and authoritarianism, as though an evil father figure will be the saving grace, we have another option, one that is not replayed through millennia, one we have not yet played in any capacity.

The Call of Your Life

Seek the divine that pulses through every living thing. The force that drives seeds through concrete. That turns rage into revolution. That transforms pain into power.

Stop asking permission to exist entirely.

Stop explaining your pain to those who profit from it.

Stop waiting for the right moment—it's now or it's never.

The world will do as it will with or without you. You decide what to do with this little life of yours. One bright spark between two unknowable truths, our life a blip in a continuum of darkness. No man, nor any human being of any race or gender, king, dictator, boss, or pontiff has the authority to control your light.

Brothers:

This isn't about making you smaller. It's about all of us becoming more.

Pass the mic. Step back. When SHE speaks, you amplify.

Use your privilege as a battering ram against closed doors, not a key just for yourself.

Stop talking about being an ally. Be one. In the meeting. At the dinner table. In the voting booth. When it costs you something, when the others don't agree, when your neck is on the line, let HER shine.

Sisters:

You are not broken. You are breaking free. Your rage is not hysteria—it's clarity. Your exhaustion is not weakness—it's evidence of how long you've been fighting. Your refusal to comply is not selfishness—it's salvation.

Don't spend another second of your sweet time in the victim seat. You have earned your right by being born; the life you are living NOW is the proof of your sacred gift. Your youth is a currency the world will waste like dime store candy. Stop waiting for permission that will never come. Stop looking for validation from systems designed to keep you small. The seat at their table? It's poisoned. Build your own table, build your own business, build your own house. Don't waste your time trying to secure a seat by bargaining with chips they give you; build your own bank and become the currency.

The Collective Flame

Own your light like a flame in the night, and don't fear their wrath, because that is all they have against you. They will shame you as they always have, call us names, and drag our stories through their small-minded fears and narratives. Don't let their fear dull your sword.

You are the light, and they are the past; they are death, and you are creation.

Do whatever you want, dream bigger than you can imagine, and set your course for the life of abundance you must shape, as no one will give you permission.

With fathers who believe in us and husbands who champion us and share the housework, with sacrifice on both sides, just maybe in one lifetime the tide will return to a changed landscape, one that generates before it destroys, one that encourages growth over weak-minded control.

Band together. Not in service to another's vision of order, but in defiance of everything that would compress the infinite into the controllable.

You want to start that impossible business? Start it.

You want to leave that suffocating relationship? Leave.

You want to create art that makes people uncomfortable? Create it.

You want to burn down your respectable life and build something wild? Light the match.

Your dreams aren't too big. They're not big enough. Dream bigger. Dream weirder. Dream in ways that would terrify the people trying to keep you small.

I'm not asking you to hope. Hope is passive.

I'm asking you to rise. To fight. To refuse. To create. To destroy what needs to be destroyed and build what needs to be built.

You know that thing you do when someone gets too close to the truth?

That automatic deflection, that practiced laugh, that sudden need to check your phone?

That thing, which you might do differently in hindsight, is not a permanent feature.

That thing is your programming, not you, and changing programming is part of the lifecycle of all humans and all software.

Welcome to your refactor.

Before your life is cracked open to the splintering light piercing every mask bestowed by childhood, and after the inflection point, there is a crossroads.

The moment of decision, the crisis (or crossroads in Greek), is the point at which the decision is made to turn inward, to ascend by entering the void within.

Default settings are installed by childhood, society, and fear, and add up to an operating manual used by adults but written for a time (and childhood) already long gone.

In software, legacy code must be patched (with minor fixes) and refactored (overhauled).

There is no hiding from a bug in critical code with the potential to take your entire sales process offline.

We face the music, complain heartily about the authors of the legacy code, roll up our sleeves, and get into it.

When at last you burst the bubble of ego and swallow the unsettled feeling understandably accompanying the void, humility is the reward—a gentle, peaceful medicine to the overstimulated soul.

A lot of words to say this: open the box in the closet under the clothes behind the winter sheets.

These corners of ourselves.

They will relentlessly emerge again until we hear our triggered moments as the message they hold.

All of your defaults and "knee-jerk" reactions, or "just how I am" moments, are not truly you.

Your default behavior is a mirror to the parts that aren't aligned with the rest of you.

Surrender to the Void

One way, no other, in the end, we all confront the void.

The terror of the void keeps us small and safe from changing.

You can't fix what you won't face, and in life and software, the debug log and the moments you feel ashamed are the diagnostic tools for understanding root cause.

Humility emerges from confronting the void, and agency is born from embracing the chaos and contradictions of our inner world.

That feeling the moment you lose the audience, that tension, right there…

What do you do with it?

Simon Sinek once lost his line while delivering a talk, early in his career. He was mortified, of course, but took a beat and then graciously asked if the audience would kindly remind him of his last line.

The audience did, Sinek continued, and at the end received an enthusiastic and warm standing ovation; he had connected through the moment of tension rather than leaning away from it.

Sinek transformed that moment into audience connection; his grace and humility, which is charming in the most genuine of ways, made way for connection.

That moment is when your mask slips, and you react —by default or by awareness — in one of a million possible human ways. This moment of decision to crumble or open is the inflection point of growth toward change and connection, or stasis and defensive posture.

The audience is waiting for permission to be human right along with you, to experience the passion of your pitch or the inspiration of your story; let them experience the gift of your humanity—give yourself that gift.

When you are in a room full of humans, eyes on you, and you are telling a story, delivering a speech, or explaining the features of your product, you are not fighting the energy in the room; you choose to work with it rather than allow the frequency to overrun your circuitry.

Aligning your energy takes command of the moment and relaxes the audience. The people want to be entertained, or in the very least, enlightened and informed.

A Better Place to Play

When you learn to smooth the contours of your inner landscape, you are taking the lead in your own play; the nerves remain, and your reaction to them evolves.

You are not a lost soul or a broken person; you are running old code on an exquisitely dynamic and dimensional system. The tools are available right inside. The band Oasis pierced the foggy veil of the '90s era grunge despair with the clarion call "Slip inside the eye of your mind; don't you know you might find a better place to play?"

Open to hidden corners, to the discomfort of being human, you are no longer alone.

You are one of every living human tracing a journey across lifetimes, and we are part of every human who lived before and after we have lived.

In our world of one human within one community, this work is transformative.

It is also timely.

Seth Godin and I agree that now is an opportunity-rich time, turbulent and uncertain, and precisely the fodder of all creative moments in history.

Now is precisely the time to do this work, to turn inward to what is knowable, to your raison d'être, your reason for being here.

The generations alive now have a collective fingerprint; we will leave this shadow in our wake once we are gone.

What is our gestalt?

That word that sums the wave of a generation as it crests into the shadowy bend of the rear-view mirror.

The patterns, the loops, the recursive functions of generational trauma play in real-time as our thumb reaches for the next scroll.

This time, right now, we possess both the language to describe our internal operating systems and the existential pull to roll up our sleeves individually and collectively and begin to refactor the outdated code, legacy from the best attempts of the past.

Our earlier versions brought us to where we are today; the work of today requires scale, security, and dynamism, and with these new requirements, a refactor of legacy code is necessary.

We are not breaking down. We are breaking open.

The box in the closet under the clothes behind the winter sheets? That is where your shame is hiding, protecting your power and keeping you small and static.

Next time you feel that automatic deflection rising, that practiced laugh loading, stop. Watch what runs beneath it. That is your source code. That is where the real work begins.

On the journey towards becoming a more complete and grounded human, or shall I say, becoming an aligned human, we often need mantras and quick phrases we can return to when the ground beneath our feet feels shaky, which it does, frequently.

Perhaps you're already on the path to self-discovery, or maybe you are just beginning to realize the wealth of untapped potential beneath the surface-level conditioned responses accumulated over a lifetime of reacting to the world using the tools provided in childhood.

Either way, the tools of inquiry and grounding are the same. Self-work is hard shit. You will be tired, over it, and ready to return to the so-called "normal" from whence you came. You can't do that, and trust me, the pain of your unevaluated life was crushing your soul. Being out of alignment with your inner world is not only a painful reality but also a life wasted.

Why We Resist Change

Our brains are prediction machines, optimized for survival, not transformation. When you reach for change, your nervous system tells you if the change feels friendly or hostile.

How our nervous system feels about the world is the shadow of our unresolved trauma, be that trauma from childhood or adulthood. Trauma lives in the body until our mind can process the parts that are, as of yet, too painful to touch.

Although our rational mind prefers to live in a pragmatic world, the reality is that our body stores the memory. Our brains extend beyond the rational; our nervous system is an extension of the brain, with neurons located throughout the body.

Our nervous system is our operating system.

The childhood tools we inherited as adults are remnants from a different operating system, the one we used to survive whatever our childhood threw our way.

Tools for Pattern Recognition

Body Scan: Tension throughout your body, shallow breathing, achy shoulders, and neck are asking you to listen to what you are holding onto too tightly.

Infinite Repeat: Notice when you're having the same conversation, same conflict, same disappointment; this is a scenario you need to resolve, you are creating the conditions for your experience. There is choice in each act of our entire existence.

The Story Loop: Listen to how you explain your life to others. You have a personal narrative that you don't own until you become aware of the stories you tell yourself and others. Our stories are not TRUTH; they are the interpretation of our memory through the present lens. Each time we pull a memory forward, our current perspective shapes that memory; likewise, when we change our narrative, we change our experience.

Mantras for Alignment with Purpose

• I do this action today in the service of my future self.

• I trust my skills; this action is an act of faith in my capabilities.

• I chose to speak with kindness and support to myself, like a friend and coach.

• Every step I take toward my goal, even if it's small, is an act of love and respect, banking on my future self and the life I am building.

• I remind myself that I believe in myself when I take better care of myself, especially during difficult times.

Pushback is a Sign it's Working.

Your patterns will scream. Your body will revolt. Everyone who benefits from your masks will sense you are different.

This is not failure.

Your future self already knows what you're just beginning to suspect: The void isn't empty. It's full of everything you've been too afraid to want.

You are strong enough to be real.

The weight of your overloaded self will be displaced with the energy you create by listening to yourself and treating yourself as a human being, not a vessel with a brain in it.

With ease, we can learn to trust a safe world.

As someone who punishes yourself for any setback, you know that setting rules that omit all of your coping mechanisms will immediately or soon thereafter backfire.

Start with loving kindness.

Do one small loving action, out loud or in the physical world, directed at you, the human.

• Say out loud, "I am a lovable human, I deserve love and am capable of loving without fear."

• Gift yourself a massage, pedicure, or sauna package.

• When you feel the tightness, constriction, or tension, take a walk, stretch, or simply be nice to yourself for 10-30 minutes.

Your nervous system needs to learn that the world won't end if you treat yourself like you matter.

Eventually, the path becomes the way life just is.

This work never ends, no ceremony for being human, no certificate or guarantee that it will work out.

What changes is your relationship to the work. Instead of working to one day retire, the work you do becomes how you live, who you are, and why you sustain lifelong passion.

This is not for everyone, but it might be for you if...

You find yourself bored by what once challenged you, and you repeat the pattern of success ==> boredom because you have not yet found your meaning, or the work has not aligned with you, and you eventually realize you are still searching.

This Is Not For Everyone

You are still reading. You might be imagining how to implement part of this.

Don't overthink it.

There is a space between the old and new way; you learn to navigate it through your body.

Listen to and start to love your human body. Not to make it better, but to make YOU better.

The thing is, healthy people know this, but it always feels new when you have not been allowed to fully inhabit YOU as a human being, mind, spirit, and body.

You don't sacrifice the things that keep you balanced when it is hard; instead, you double up on them—sleep, walks, and the parts of your life you might have been putting off.

You are a human in a human body; the body of mammals is part of the organisms that make up life on Earth.

This body carries a knowledge that comes from the Earth—we are beings of flesh and bone, an intelligence within an intelligent system.

The Past Does NOT Dictate The Future

We need a different and better version of our individual and collective futures. The knowledge is within us, but we must first lay the foundation with a blueprint that aligns with the future our future selves will thank us for.

With our own evolution toward connected, aligned selves, we are building a stronger collective. You are part of the collective of humanity as long as you are alive.

Take the remedy of kindness, no matter what path you are on.

You are now building the internal infrastructure needed for sustainable innovation.

The Debug Process:

1. Error log: Naming what's draining you (not just "everything")

2. Stack trace: Following exhaustion back to its source

4. Version control: Noticing which version of "rest" actually restored you

Your creative juices won't flow unless you are flowing.

You are a human in a body.

Ignoring your flesh and bones is not good for flow-state.

Energy is life, fixity is death.

Rigidity holds energy and locks us in place, trapping us from evolving so that we feel suspended in time.

Movement reminds us of the fundamentals: energy must move and transfer; there is a natural flow to our bodies, our routines, our lives, just as there is rhythm in the Universe.

The same rhythms that move tides and seasons move through us.

We exhaust ourselves twice - once from the work, once from the resistance to rhythms of work and rest vital and vitally in need of defending, that all humans require to thrive.

That vicious inner commentary—the one that turns brushing teeth into a performance review, that makes every human moment evidence of inadequacy—generations of fear dressed up as productivity.

Sometimes we find ourselves in an ultra marathon run that's taking longer than expected, and we didn't sign up for that, but here we are.

How we frame our existence shapes our experience.

I am working on an update for my routine this summer, and this is my prompt:

Claude, or Chat, or Sir Lancelot (pick your AI chatbot favorite flavor):

I need to optimize my life as a founder. Beta v2 ships in 4 weeks. Currently pulling 12-hour days with "irregular breaks" (translation: forgetting to eat). Need to add: barre 2x/week, walks 6x/week, meditation, better sleep (targeting 5:30 am wake time)—budget: 2.5 hours/week for meetings. Create a schedule that achieves all professional milestones while improving well-being (consider I require novelty, not to rebel).

Useful ideas:

No. It recommended I watch a digital sunset.

Your scheduling problem is part of it, it's that second exhaustion—the one we create ourselves.

The running commentary of inadequacy that makes every human moment a performance review.

Maybe that's the evolution.

I prompted the AI to make this a mindset shift with experimentation:

Repeat daily. Adjust weekly. Data is feedback, not judgment.

The Four-Word Rituals aren't a cure. They're just language.

They are tools if you like.

Tools and introspection work in tandem for best results, at least together daily, to assess results, observe, and iterate.

Agency Frees Your Mind

How we frame our existence shapes our experience.

Find the places you have a choice and already choose daily, what is that choice about? Why do you make it, or instead did you only just now realize you are making a choice?

Gentleness is not the absence of ambition. It is the lubrication that lets ambition run without overheating. Go gently equals ship predictably.

Gentle ≠ idle.

Gentle is movement without judgment, rest without performance metrics, choice without apology.

The 10‑minute walk that outperforms two hours of doom‑scrolling.A midday lie‑down executed with the same decisiveness as a product launch.A refusal to equate busyness with value.

Hard work tiredness is expected.

The hidden danger is the self‑inflicted version—relentless mental audits that turn brushing teeth into a quarterly review.

This "second exhaustion" doubles energy loss and halves clarity.

So, consider microdosing breaks if you need to start small, like I do.

Use AI to take an audit of your processes, even and perhaps especially essential processes such as how you work creatively and otherwise.

Not knowing is a horrible feeling. Humans deplore uncertainty so much that once upon a time, we regulated how companies could claim certainty without evidence, knowing that if allowed, naive and vulnerable consumers would choose artificial certainty over the truth that nothing is certain, not now, not yesterday, and certainly not tomorrow.

From snake oil salesmen to aquarium cleaner cures for COVID-19, bad actors looking to turn a profit on the most reliable of human fears have coexisted alongside our anxiety about the future as far back as our history tells us.

Awareness, it turns out, does not help the matter. One hundred years ago, uncertainty was relatively local to you and likely determined whether you lived past 30 or died of malnutrition or disease.

Now we have access and abundance, almost. Perhaps it is in the "almost" where our anxiety breeds. Either way, the living standards of most humans have vastly improved due to technology, science, and post-war efforts to look forward after two horrific world wars (lest we forget). Those who lived through them wanted us to remember and never slip backward again.

Technology ties and binds us to our lives. Our time is measured and assessed, our schedules are micromanaged and optimized, our finances are automated, and our health is monitored by wearable devices. Yet, we feel a collective doom is coming around the corner.

This doom could be that we live in a time of wannabe dictators on a global scale, the United States abdicating the bastion of hope that called to foreign shores, calls no more.

Duplicity and hypocrisy reveal themselves so frequently that one wonders if any bearing can be had.

The truth is all of this.

There is truth in the ugliness we never want to look at. There are times when the ugliness must be revealed and then addressed, as it is.

For my entire life, I believed I knew what deep connection was. I thought I was connected to those around me. When I stepped off the path, I saw.

Of course, no path is the same between two humans; however, we all walk a prescribed path for at least part of our lives.

The freedom to choose differently is not granted, but stolen from the fear that holds your focus to the horizon of compliance.

Freedom does not care about your quarterly bonus, your unlimited PTO, your CEO's outsized ego, and the fact that he thinks it is perfectly acceptable to tell you he will "open the Kimono" when he wants to share an important company update.

Cultural appropriation and egotistical grandstanding with a sexual harassment undercurrent, in the name of transparency?

Freedom from the prescribed path does not mean quitting your job and forsaking your material possessions and responsibilities.

What you do is not as important as how you do it.

The work of providing for your family is noble, and if you are okay with the trade-off between your employer and your time, no worries, my friend, and congratulations!

For many of us, however, a soft voice whispers from the start. When I found Maslow's hierarchy of needs, I used it as my career roadmap.

What I thought was a blueprint for a satisfying career revealed much more.

At the time, my super-logical brain excitedly clung to this model as both an answer to why work sucked right now and a map to point towards what to look for next.

As a single mother and primary breadwinner for my household, luck was on my side when I entered the world of corporate tech. The demand for talented engineers who can effectively communicate with other humans is real today, but it was even more desperate leading up to and through the pandemic.

When I learned it was possible, with every change of job, I earned at least 10k more while improving the work and team at each stage. I was climbing up the hierarchy.

What is at the top? Meaningful work and personal freedom, whoops.

Did I need to learn that I would not find this in the corporate world? Yes.

The severance I received after the layoffs began, which hit tech on the heels of the COVID-19 pandemic, was enough to start walking the new path.

The path of uncertainty feels like free-falling, and then you catch yourself. You remember that you have been navigating the unknown with bad maps and the help of strangers since you landed on this planet as a toothless infant.

The path of uncertainty is the path all humans walk. But to choose the path and decide to embrace the void, that is art; that is also a requirement to be both an artist and a founder.

The hardest part of the past two and a half years has been the manifold realizations about my Self.

At my peak in corporate tech, the software engineer identity was everything: my shield, my armor, my proof of worth.

Overachievers and people-pleasers are incredible when young and naive. Once we realize what we have been doing and the youth, depleted and irreplaceable from striving, refuses to carry us through the overwork, our time is up.

The flip-side of our striving is a world of pain behind the excellent work and optimistic outlook. Strivers sacrifice time, energy, happiness, all in hope that our effort is rewarded by not only validation but connection, acceptance, the love we failed to give ourselves, the pain of generations.

What is good enough for others is not enough for the striving soul.

Your nights and weekends seem a small price to pay in exchange for acknowledgment or validation.

Whether you never had enough or you had too much, the source of your striving stems from the beginning.

Your childhood is the best place to look for clues.

There are lots of books in all your favorite flavors. Start with one that speaks to you. For me, it was classic: Brené Brown's Daring Greatly. Brené put words to the inexplicable behavior of myself, my mom, and just about everyone I had ever known. Then, I started searching for more.

Once you see, you can't unsee. I realize now that my whole world was built as a protective measure against the fear I have carried since my infancy. All of my friendships and family relationships have been built along the fault lines of my fear.

No one knew me. This was the scariest part of my awakening.

Who Are You?

Of course, it follows that if you know little of your Self, it is impossible for others to know more than you do on this subject.

Our masks are uncanny representations of who we wish the world to believe we are.

Masks worn into adulthood are remnants of who we believed our parents wished us to be, then our schoolmates, and later spouse and colleagues.

When I began to share truths about myself with those I believed knew me well, I initially encountered doubt and skepticism.

We create an artful artifice and proceed with life. My artiface was pretty as it was pleasing, the sunny and reliable version of a person I thought would keep me safe as a girl, smiling and encouraging of others, asking nothing.

When we tear it all down right in the middle of the race, it must look like a childish act of privilege or insanity from the outside.

Learning to lean into the next step. I am writing this today not as a call to abandon your post and join me in the open waters of uncertainty.

Nor do I wish to scare you away from the reality you will face when you grip reality by the shoulders and spin her around, only to find nothing but questions that lead you deeper inward.

Every day is a choice. Your passion, if you pursue it, is a choice and gift. Your work, no matter why you do it, is a contribution to the greater whole. We have the skills to navigate this unknown before us. The skills are what make us human. The knowing is not outside of us but within each of us.

You decide if your fear wins today and every moment thereafter.

In the void, we make plans and take steps to complete the journey you and I are living. In the unknown, we cast a net of creative problem-solving, holding contrasting truths side by side in our minds; there is no certainty, only the need to create and persist.

To be human is to create.

To be human is to believe in impossible realities and take steps to make them so.

I am writing to you today to tell you that you do not need permission to believe in the truth of your power to create. Whoever you are and wherever you come from, you do not need an advanced degree to participate in the important work of your life; all you need is to begin.

The same part of your brain is activated when you thirst for water as when you thirst for knowledge.

The art of it comes with learning to captain the ship of your mind—the mind, both sea and sailor; alternating between waves.

Essentially, you and I are dropped into the ocean of our minds, collectively and alone, without instructions, without a map.

Most spend their lives believing the territory of the familiar represents the entire map of their minds.

Such beliefs give way to humility when experiencing the quantum potential of self-awareness.

With self-awareness, we earn moments—moments between.

Moments between action and reaction—moments to decide.

Something outside us wakes us to ourselves.

This story dates back to ancient times; the lowly human, challenged by the necessary foe, takes up the mantle and begins the journey of a hero, finding her way back home.

Our modern hero contends with modern foes. Today, the invitation comes because the arc of life bends in a broken way and ends in a layoff, a divorce, or a depression.

The reckoning is the first step toward home.

Home is the familiar known you hold deep in your heart.

The part of you that feels older than this lifetime, the part of you that whispers silent truths you always remember.

Now you are awake, you begin to see through the prescribed life that didn't deliver.

You notice what you have to date ignored, your soul.

If you are willing to believe that you have work to do in this lifetime and that this lifetime is an opportunity to figure yourself out enough to do the job, then waking up is the beginning of the rest of your life.

The Quest

The path that brought you here holds clues.

No matter how old you are, where you live, or how much or little of something you have, reflect on your life, and you will see the patterns of your unique thumbprint as a curious human being.

The prescriptions that failed you are gone, but so is your sense of direction.

The map you made before feels flimsy, a bad copy of a questionable original.

You are the product of what came before and the possibility that now unfolds before you.

Possibility is what you see when the tickle of thirst points you toward curiosity in your quest for knowledge.

A Practice of Curious Questions:

• "What is this showing me?" redirects from victimhood to learning

• "What wants to die in me?" acknowledges that growth often requires letting go

• "What am I not seeing?" assumes there's always more to discover

• "Where am I lying to myself?" demands radical honesty

Before your ego is awake, early in the morning, a notebook and a pen, no phone allowed—write your morning pages.

Express the mental goo, dislodge your imagination. The day can begin with a clearing, try it as an experiment with curiosity.

Most of us drift through our early decades on autopilot, following a well-worn script someone else wrote: collect credentials, chase promotions, gather possessions, striving toward our preordained destiny.

Then life happens. The divorce papers. The pink slip. The diagnosis. The death. The depression that arrives with your body's final plea, to you, for change.

The reckoning you've been avoiding is also the homecoming you've been seeking. The yearning you can't place is for what you are just now remembering you left behind—you, in all your pure curiosity.

You bob and weave
Butterfly and bee
Synchronicity

Rehearsed steps reliably lead away
from
curiosity.

The water is deep—
You are sea-worthy
Wrestle yourself free
Pardon the pain, excuse it from your body.

You never asked to be diminished
Your path led you here to now
The compass is broken
The map no longer works
The territory is uncertain

Only now you know the truth—
The water is wet no matter the depth.

You swim by the stars
The map of the universe
Unfolds to the curious.

The morning pages are calling. The pen is waiting. The stars are there to navigate by.

There are lessons learned in your bones.

I love a good team. A good engineering team is like an engine humming at the perfect hertz frequency. Often, however, it is not this way; that is where lessons and experience come in, and are likewise earned along the way through experience.

Two and a half years.

I have taken a day or two off.

The Creative Block & The Assault of Butterflies

Why do the best ideas feel the most dangerous?

You know the moment. Mid-pitch, stomach clenched, defending instead of explaining. Or hovering over "publish" while that voice whispers: "Do you really have the authority to hold this outsider opinion?"

We've been sold a story about creative blocks.

Most creatives and entrepreneurs assume these moments are about confidence, imposter syndrome, or simply "the creative process."

Those reactions are patterns your nervous system learned before you could walk—legacy code running your creative operating system.

Your brain still thinks visibility equals danger, but the creative economy rewards exactly what you fear: bold, authentic expression.

While your conscious mind is focused on strategy, skills, and market timing, your unconscious mind quietly sabotages your best opportunities.

Every watered-down pitch, every "safe" creative choice, and every delayed launch costs you real money and impact.

Unconscious brain processes trigger bodily reactions before conscious awareness is surfaced—the investor question derails you, and your five-year-old self (who learned that being questioned meant being in trouble) drives the response.

Beyond mindfulness, there is integration.

The ancient Buddhist practice of Sati helped practitioners understand the interconnected nature of all phenomena and recognize that what we call “Self” is actually an emergent property of dynamic processes.

Sati involves active awareness of what's happening in your system while remembering deeper truths about the temporary nature of these reactions.

Sati is the practice of conscious discrimination between old patterns and present reality.

What you experience as your "creative self," "business self," and "inner child" aren't separate entities but emergent patterns arising from complex interactions within your nervous system.

The aspects of your conscious and unconscious mind are specialized subsystems that can learn to work together.

You can transform self-sabotage into self-actualization, it is a matter of getting your butterflies to fly in formation.

Emergent Properties of Integration

The Network Effect in Creative Teams:

As neurons create consciousness through complex interactions, your team's creativity emerges from the quality of connections between members.

When you're triggered and defensive, you disrupt the entire network.

When you're integrated and present, you enhance collective intelligence.

Emergence Over Force:

Complex systems self-organize when conditions are right.

Instead of forcing breakthrough ideas, create conditions: psychological safety, diverse inputs, and space for emergence.

Phase Transitions in Business Growth:

Like water becoming steam, business growth often happens suddenly after prolonged preparation.

Your unconscious patterns can keep you stuck just below critical transformation points.

Integration work frequently precedes major business breakthroughs—not coincidentally, but causally.

Unconscious Saboteurs

Unconscious reaction sabotage results systematically and limit your potential. Taking a chance on your creativity means you must be willing to take a real chance. Keeping one foot on the so-called safe side of the fence will dim the light of your inspiration at best and completely derail earnest efforts toward progress on your vision at worst.

Awareness is the key. Fling the door open wide to prevent the common pitfalls of letting your hindbrain read the operating manual to your life.

I have personally experienced all of the items below as a result of letting fear hiding behind unconscious patterns:

• You water down your boldest ideas to avoid criticism

• You overwork to prove your worth instead of trusting your value

• You avoid networking because rejection feels like abandonment

• You procrastinate on passion projects that feel "too personal."

Imagine catching that stomach-tightening moment before it hijacks your pitch.

Instead of defending, you pause, recognize the old pattern, and respond consciously.

Your inner child feels seen and safe while your adult self handles business.

When you integrate these parts of yourself:

• Creative risks feel exciting instead of terrifying

• Feedback becomes information, not attack

• Your authentic voice strengthens instead of hiding

• Business decisions come from clarity, not reactivity

The benefits compound. Your team feels the difference when you're not operating from triggered patterns. Clients trust leaders who've done their inner work. Creativity flows when it's not fighting internal resistance.

Your Creative Ally

Your unconscious patterns aren't obstacles to success—they're the raw material for your deepest creative work, information about what needs to be healed, integrated, or expressed.

The fruit of self-knowledge is always worth the labor—especially when that knowledge transforms how you show up in your creative and entrepreneurial life.

The Blessing & Curse of Ambition

As an entrepreneur, you also have ambition, ideas, passion, and limited time for a to-do list that never seems to diminish.

If your superpower is making time stand still, the elusive balance between duty and life is attainable; otherwise, you are human, and reading another article about why you need balance will likely tip you over the edge.

I don't believe in buzzwords, either, however…

With 87.7% of entrepreneurs facing at least one mental health challenge and 68% experiencing burnout symptoms, the need for intentional self-care has never been more critical.¹

Yet only 33% of entrepreneurs take proper vacations, and 67% feel they don't have enough time for self-care activities.²

The statistics paint a stark picture: we're facing an epidemic of entrepreneurial exhaustion.

TheTechMargin is my startup and a lifeboat after hitting the burnout wall pretty hard in corporate tech.

Burnout is a sneaky phenomenon that creeps up on you.

A telltale sign of burnout is apathy for work that used to excite you.

The work has not changed, but you have likely failed to rest, and now the work makes you bitter and resentful or some other form of toxic thinking; pick your flavor.

Whether working for a W2 (paycheck) or building an online business, burnout will deplete your passion for the work you once loved.

What many don't realize is that 40% of entrepreneurs report feeling isolated and lonely, with 50% lacking a strong support system.³

Isolation compounds the burnout, creating a cycle where entrepreneurs feel disconnected not only from their work but also from their communities and support networks.

The key is prevention; if you are already in burnout, seek help from a professional or coach.

Therapy, a mastermind group, and one-on-one coaching brought me clarity.

Today, I am sharing a framework you can use to assess and improve your working relationship to work.

Rúna's Framework

My coach, Rúna, taught me The Four Pillars of Vitality.

The pillars consist of True Play, True Rest, True Work, and True Study.

This framework is designed for self-assessment and understanding when balance is lacking in your life, as well as for rebuilding in a way that works specifically for you.

We create balance by learning what motivates us and what recharges us. Why did you become an entrepreneur in the first place?

Likely, a desire for more agency in your life and work factored into your decision to blaze your trail.

Over time, however, the deadlines and meetings pile on, and we become controlled by externalities.

Unable to gain perspective on what we want and need, our normal shifts to a schedule full of commitments we don't want to commit to.

Play

Taking back control of your calendar is the first step.

Setting boundaries around scheduling will not limit access to new clients and business opportunities.

You will set an example to your clients and colleagues: healthy people lead healthy businesses.

With 37% of entrepreneurs struggling to disconnect from work during personal or family time, establishing these boundaries is crucial.⁴

Setting boundaries around your schedule creates space for the first pillar, True Play.

Dance, playing games with friends, and singing are examples of play; what counts as play will look different for each of us.

True Play is joyful and expansive, improving your outlook. Make time for it in your schedule, and joy will spill over into your work and life.

Current wellness trends emphasize what experts call "soft wellness" – gentle, joyful activities that prioritize presence over productivity rather than performance-driven exercise.⁵

Your True Play might mean joining a local dance class, taking up painting, or engaging in chess nights with friends.

The goal isn't to add another item to your achievement list but to rediscover activities that make you feel alive and connected.

Consider incorporating micro-wellness practices throughout your day, such as 10-20 minute creative breaks that serve no purpose other than to bring you joy.

Rest

Next, we need to talk about True Rest. We are not seesaws.

Therefore, balance is dimensional and not simply about the number of hours awake vs. asleep.

While sleep is essential, True Rest happens when you engage in activities that recharge your batteries, leaving you feeling balanced.

Going for a walk with my dog and listening to an inspiring podcast is a favorite activity I easily incorporate into my day.

I always feel more ready to get to work after taking some time outside in nature.

Like play, rest will look different for each of us.

Resting in this manner should help alleviate your stress, leaving your body and mind feeling energized and clear.

Modern rest also involves nervous system regulation – practices that help calm your autonomic nervous system after periods of high stress.⁶

True Rest ideas include breath-work, gentle stretching, or even strategic use of technology.

Health and mindfulness apps can help track your rest patterns and remind you to take breaks, with the global health app market reflecting entrepreneurs' increasing commitment to wellness.⁷

However, true rest often means creating digital boundaries, such as designated phone-free times, limiting evening screen exposure, and establishing tech-free zones in your living space.

Work

Ikigai, or True Work, is not necessarily what we do for a living.

Ikigai is a Japanese concept that represents work situated at the intersection of four quadrants: work we love, work we are good at, work that the world needs, and work that can be monetized.

True Work might not be your job or business, but if you are an entrepreneur, your work likely aligns with two or three of the components of Ikigai.

Whatever your vocation, your work will be enriched by balancing the Four Pillars of Vitality.

Exhaustion can impact the work you love if you neglect to strike a balance.

Maintain harmonious rather than obsessive passion for your work.

This distinction matters: when your work becomes an all-consuming obsession rather than a passionate pursuit balanced with other aspects of life, burnout becomes almost inevitable.

Study

A clue to discovering our True Work, True Study fascinates us and engages us to the extent that the external world becomes muted.

True Study strengthens our assimilative qualities.

The integration of True Study with True Work is a virtuous cycle, sparking innovative solutions through the assimilation of knowledge and practical experience.

True balance brings self-discovery, compassion, joy, and energy. Be gentle with yourself and enjoy the journey.

Warning Signs Inventory

Use the following self-inventory to ensure you are in alignment with your goals and self-image.

1. Am I thriving? (Answer without self-judgment)

2. Do I have command over my reactions to the events and people in my life? (i.e., do I lose my temper or become depressed, etc.)

3. How is my energy level throughout the day?

4. Do I have energy (and time) for the people and activities I love (if these are not already closely related to my work or work life)?

5. Am I excited about what lies ahead this year?

6. Despite wanting to stop because they are bad for my health (mentally and/or physically), do I continue behaviors such as drinking, eating junk food, and the like because I use them as comfort or relaxation from work?

7. Am I getting exercise every day?

8. When was the last time I was curious?

Use (and download) the list as a check-in and to help understand your benchmark for each of the areas that are important in your life.

Building Your Support Network

Beyond the Four Pillars, successful entrepreneurs recognize that they cannot—and should not—navigate this journey alone.

With only 25% of entrepreneurs seeking professional help for mental health issues despite widespread need, there's a dangerous gap between struggle and support.⁹

Building a robust support network involves multiple layers, including professional mentorship, peer communities, mental health professionals when needed, and personal relationships that exist outside of your business identity.

Consider joining entrepreneur mastermind groups, attending local business meetups, or even scheduling regular coffee meetings with fellow founders.

These connections serve as both professional resources and personal anchors during challenging times.

A rested, supported, and mentally healthy founder makes better decisions, leads more effectively, and builds more sustainable businesses.

Whether it's therapy, coaching, or simply regular check-ins with trusted advisors, investing in your mental health is investing in your business's future.

True balance brings self-discovery, compassion, joy, and energy.

In a world where entrepreneurial burnout has become commonplace, choosing a different path—one that honors both your ambitions and your humanity—is itself an act of innovation.

Be gentle with yourself and enjoy the journey.

Life is curious; we contain multitudes; expand your aperture—life is happening with every shifting perspective.

Super Customizers and Everyone Else

I forget that not everyone wants to customize everything because, as long as I can remember, that is precisely what I have done.

From changing the browser to a non-default option on my computers and devices to changing the color, font, and sounds of any app or piece of tech gear, customizing is not only enjoyable but also a necessary part of my process.

Super-customizers like to change their hair, reveal their personality through style and clothing, and are not afraid to differentiate themselves, even if that means others won't "get it."

My creative coders and engineering friends who love to build assume everyone wants the same level of control. We crave creativity because we live and breathe customization. The reality of most of your customers, however, will fall somewhere in between accepting the defaults and desiring complete creative freedom.

What Is the IKEA Effect?

The IKEA Effect is a cognitive bias where people place a disproportionately high value on products they help create themselves.

Named after the Swedish furniture giant whose customers assemble their purchases, researchers Michael Norton, Daniel Mochon, and Dan Ariely first identified this psychological phenomenon.

Their studies found that people were willing to pay 63% more for furniture they assembled compared to identical pre-built pieces.

The core principle is that "labor leads to love." When we invest effort into creating something—even just following assembly instructions—we develop stronger emotional attachments and perceive higher value.

But this goes far beyond furniture assembly...

Observe how people use your product to understand your customer threshold for creative exploration.

Humans explore creative freedom in different ways, but research shows there are distinct categories of customizers and creators:

• Non-Customizers: In art, they buy prints at IKEA rather than commissioning originals. In business, they choose Teams over Slack and Microsoft over Apple because "everyone knows how it works." They are not lazy—they have decision fatigue from other parts of their lives and want your product to be the calm, predictable constant that gets the job done. Keep it Simple (KISS) for these users and do a job well; they will stick around if your price is right, but don't be surprised when they jump ship for a cheaper alternative, even one with a hideous user interface.

• New Customizers: Picture someone using Canva for the first time after decades of PowerPoint templates. Or the new guitarist who bought their first pedal and keeps tweaking the distortion knob during the entire song. They are fascinated by the possibility but overwhelmed by the breadth of options. They want to customize but need heavy guidance—think guided onboarding, preset themes with minor tweaks, and training wheels you can eventually remove. This is your growth segment if you can cater to their curiosity without overwhelming them.

• Active Customizers: These are your fellow travelers with 47 browser extensions, custom mechanical keyboards, and dotfiles repositories with 200+ commits. In art, they mix their paint colors and build custom easels. Entrepreneurs here have Zapier workflows connecting 15 tools in ways the original developers never imagined. They want APIs; they want to dig into settings menus and feel like co-architects of their experience.

• Lapsing Customizers: Former power users who have hit customization fatigue. Think of a developer who used to configure open-source Linux setup on reconfigured hardware but now wants their MacBook to work without configuration. Or an artist who built elaborate custom studio setups but now prefers simple, reliable tools. They have been burned by complexity before—maybe that custom WordPress theme that broke during an update, the elaborate Notion workspace that became maintenance overhead, or the startup that failed because they over-engineered everything. They still appreciate good design and thoughtful defaults but have learned that sometimes vanilla is best.

Customization preferences reflect a broader pattern in how people approach creative control. While some dive deep into settings and configurations, most users prefer a more guided experience with thoughtful defaults and limited, meaningful choices.

Each type of customizer represents a different relationship between creative control and cognitive load. Build your customization like a good API—simple by default and powerful when needed.

Focus on Viable, Lovable, and Doable

Viable

As engineers, we learn early—if we are wise—to put our egos aside and build for the customer. You are not creating an app, service, or product for yourself; you are creating value for one or many people.

Keep your customers in mind and understand how much customization matters for solving their specific problems, both in terms of the app's built-in features and the user's ability to personalize it.

Minimum Viable Product (MVP) means solving the problem the product intended to solve while maintaining usability and accessibility for users. When building viable software solutions, three critical elements must be balanced:

• Resources: The people, tools, and budget available to develop and maintain the solution

• Time: The schedule and deadlines for development and deployment

• Scope: The features, functionality, and complexity of the solution

These three elements form an interdependent triangle - changing one affects the others. Finding the right balance ensures the product efficiently addresses core needs without overwhelming users with unnecessary features or complex customization options.

Shifting our perspective from "me" and "you" toward "us"—focusing on the many customers who will love and benefit from your product or service is key when navigating the murky waters of product development and product market fit.

Lovable

The power of a Most Lovable Product (MLP) lies in its ability to strike that delicate balance between customization and simplicity, creating an experience that resonates with users while maintaining the core functionality they need.

This sweet spot of personalization allows for meaningful engagement without overwhelming users with choice, making your product both accessible and deeply personal.

We are often designing for the massive middle ground of people who want some control and personal touch but not the overwhelming complexity of infinite choice.

Finding this balance requires both empathy and data - understanding your users' needs through research while measuring how different levels of customization impact engagement and satisfaction.

Most users prefer a guided experience with thoughtful defaults and limited, meaningful choices. When building with customization in mind, remain anchored in customer needs rather than engineer preferences.

Smart defaults paired with discoverable customization features often yield the best results.

Doable

The IKEA Effect relies on the successful completion of a laborious task. If users cannot complete their customization or if their efforts are undone—such as building something only to see it destroyed—the psychological value linked to their effort disappears.

Back to the interdependent triangle of engineering principles, the scope is all about the work being doable. This is a metric only experience can teach you. Your effort, however impressive, is limited by the throughput you can deliver. As the adage goes, under promise, over deliver.

Doable is very important for the customer too. The Ikea effect collapses under the weight of too much effort. If your customers cannot finish their work, they will move on. If the barrier to entry feels too steep for the return on investment of time, users will realize the juice is not worth the squeeze and move on. Make it easier for your customer, keep it doable, and allow for discoverable levels of complexity for those power-customizers, but that does not have to be your MVP!

The Measurable Value of Co-Creation

The IKEA Effect explains something every maker already knows: people value stuff more when they help create it.

In a recent interview for the TheTechMargin podcast, photographer Stephen Kennedy shared how the transition from film to digital photography in 2000 marked a transformative shift in his creative process. As he explained, "I needed less of everything. I needed fewer lenses, I needed fewer lights... at the time, I had an assistant who traveled with me because I had so much equipment."

Less customization and less equipment allowed Stephen to focus on the essential parts of his practice: the artists he photographs, the practice of storytelling, and the emotional resonance of the subject. People have always wanted to put their fingerprints on what they buy.

Successful customization starts with human desire and then removes friction.

The Goldilocks Zone

AI makes customization accessible to a massive middle segment of consumers—those who want personal touches without becoming product designers. For those of us building consumer applications, AI-powered co-creation is becoming the gold standard for customer experience. Be mindful, however, of the exhaustion we all feel when decision fatigue sets in. We all lead busy lives, and the customizing middle segment of consumers has a threshold of options they can handle enjoyably before analysis paralysis kicks in. They leave your product for a simpler, easier option.

Considerations and Limitations

You Have to Let People Finish: The psychological effect disappears if users cannot complete the customization task.

Do not Challenge People Too Much: Make it too complicated, and you will frustrate people instead of engaging them. Your AI should adapt complexity to skill level and desire for personalization balanced with functionality.

Provide Structure, Not Chaos: Unlimited creativity sounds good in theory but often overwhelms people. Sometimes, boundaries help.

Overcome the Setup Resistance: 92% of people say they prefer to pay more for pre-assembled products when you ask them upfront. But after they build something themselves, they value it more. Optimize your product to make the co-creation process so seamless and valuable that it overcomes that initial "just give me the finished thing" impulse.

Beware: Your Labor of Love

Be aware of the self-inflicted IKEA Effect in your applications and services. The bias can lead to several pitfalls when the builder is not aware of the effect.

Mismatched Value Perception with Users: App developers often overvalue their self-developed features and complex customization options due to their investment in creating them. Meanwhile, users may find these same features unnecessary, confusing, or misaligned with their needs. This disconnect can lead to reduced app adoption and user satisfaction.

Ineffective Product Design: When developers overvalue their work, they risk creating products that reflect their preferences rather than solving real customer problems. This results in unnecessary features and overly complex customization options.

Decision Fatigue for Users: Developers who overvalue their customizable features might include too many options, causing user decision fatigue and analysis paralysis—ultimately driving users toward simpler alternatives.

Resistance to Feedback and Intervention: The IKEA Effect influences managerial behavior through the "sunk costs effect" and "not invented here" syndrome, making developers reluctant to abandon or modify projects they've heavily invested in, even when those projects are failing or inferior. A developer might resist critical feedback or avoid pivoting away from cherished features due to their emotional investment, even when changes would improve market outcomes.

• Start with Smart Defaults: Implement thoughtful, research-backed default settings that work for most users while keeping customization options discoverable.

• Guide the Experience: Create pathways for different user types, from non-customizers to power users, ensuring each group feels supported.

• Limit Choice Meaningfully: Offer 3-5 primary customization options per feature to prevent decision fatigue while maintaining user engagement.

• Enable Progressive Complexity: Layer customization features so users can dig deeper as their comfort and needs evolve.

• Optimize for Task Completion: Design customization flows that users can complete in one session, ensuring they experience the satisfaction of finishing their personalization journey.

• Measure Impact: Track how different levels of customization affect user satisfaction and engagement to refine the balance between flexibility and simplicity continuously.

Turn Your Users into Champions

The art of product development in 2025 lies in understanding that customization is about empowerment within boundaries.

Invite people into the creation process—not as a burden but as a feature. Transform them from passive users into co-creators.

The transformation from passive consumption to AI-enabled co-creation is still in its early stages. Making your customers co-creators improves business outcomes and amplifies the power of your application. Your product can become the gateway that simultaneously unlocks your customers' goals, creativity, and agency. When people help build the solution, they don't just buy it—they own it, defend it, and evangelize it.

While most users prefer guided experiences with thoughtful defaults, there will always be super-customizers who want to change everything from their browser settings to their hair color but even the most particular customizers would prefer a secure and easy-to-navigate app for critical services like banking or healthcare over a myriad of personalization options in an app with massive security flaws. Again, we return to the trifecta of scope, resources, and time.

Depending on the task or job the product or service is intended to solve, preferences and practicality should be weighted against one another.

Think of it like a coffee shop menu. While some caffeine connoisseurs want to specify their exact bean origin and precise milk temperature, most folks want a reliable cup of joe with maybe an extra shot of espresso.

When we deliver the right balance between flexibility and structure, between creativity and constraint, we create partnerships between creators and customers; we are at the center—not the tools, not you or me, but us, humans navigating the complexity of chaos and adding our personal touch as we go.

Life is curious, we contain multitudes, expand your aperture, life is happening with every shifting perspective.

Brainstorming is a process that revolves and iterates around two phases: expansion, where ideas flourish and multiply without constraint, and contraction, where those ideas are thoughtfully refined and distilled.

The beauty of this approach lies in its adaptability—embracing structure and creative freedom allows for ideation sessions that consistently yield meaningful results.

For example, by applying inversion, considering the opposite of what you're trying to achieve, and deliberately breaking established patterns, you can uncover innovative solutions that might otherwise remain hidden.

In brainstorming, there are two fundamentals; the rest is ad-lib, and you decide how creative freedom looks for you. The two fundamentals are expansion and contraction.

Expansion Phase

During the expansion phase, the focus is on generating as many ideas as possible without judgment, allowing creativity to flow freely. This stage benefits significantly from an open mindset and a conducive environment that promotes idea generation.

• Physical and mental setting: Critical for creating a comfortable, judgment-free space where ego takes a backseat.

• AI-powered tools: Can supercharge the expansion phase by quickly generating diverse ideas. Set prompts aligned with your goal and let AI surface unexpected possibilities.

• Collaborative platforms: Use tools like Miro or Trello to visually map and organize emerging ideas into clusters.

This creative process is inherently messy and non-linear. Remember that every great innovation started as a seemingly wild idea.

Contraction Phase

Once ideas feel sufficiently expansive, the contraction phase begins. Here, ideas are refined, evaluated, and shaped into actionable insights.

• Systems-thinking methods: Help refine ideas. Frameworks like decision trees or weighted rubrics guide prioritization.

• Structured feedback tools: Ensure that the most impactful ideas rise to the top.

When refining, treat each idea like a prototype: test it, tweak it, and discard what doesn't work. Think of the expansion phase as planting seeds—cast them wide without overthinking.

Embrace the chaos, knowing that structure will emerge through the expansion and contraction phases.

The key to successful brainstorming is fully embracing both phases.

The convergence of AI tools, remote collaboration platforms, and traditional creative methods demands a fresh approach to ideation.

• Decision Tree: A decision tree is a visual tool that maps out possible choices and their outcomes. It provides a structured way to evaluate options, weigh pros and cons, and make informed decisions systematically.

Choosing Your Guides (And Becoming One)

Magic happens when you see a person realize their potential.

I was fortunate to begin my mentoring journey some years ago when my kids were small and their elementary school had a program that needed volunteers to teach in the morning before the school day began.

My friend Amanda and I would use Scratch Programming to teach computer science to students as young as seven and as old as eleven—very young minds.

Scratch is a fantastic tool for young and not-so-young alike to learn programming skills and also build really cool things. I love Scratch because it allows for unlimited creativity while allowing for learning in a structured way.

My favorite moments teaching these young students were seeing their lightbulb moments when they figured out how to do something after trying so many times, but did not give up.

A mentor is not the same role as a boss or manager. Occasionally, that can happen, but it is not typical. A great boss keeps you focused on what matters and advocates for the team up the ladder, even when the downward pressure demands the inverse.

A mentor is someone who chooses you or you choose. A mentor represents you at a different point in life. Typically, a mentor shares a lot of common ground with you, such as your gender, profession, leadership style, etc. A mentor shows you truths you would not have access to without them.

I have mentored adults, high school students, and young kids, and the reward in seeing someone realize their own ability is beyond words.

Sometimes you just need someone a few steps ahead of you to believe in you more than you believe in yourself to get to that next place.

Having a mentor has been an absolute game-changer for my life.

Val, my first mentor, coached me through my first negotiations on salary, through leaving a great job for an even greater one that would cause me to grow, and so much more.

She gave me strength to see when I would have otherwise been in the dark.

What was new to me was not new to her, as she has been in the game longer than I have and knows how relevant so much of the negotiation becomes once you have a proven track record and can articulate your wins.

Find a mentor and be a mentor if you can, and in whatever field you are in.

These are human truths, not strictly for the tech world.

Dropping the Armor: From Solo to Symphony

This one is eternally difficult for many of us, myself included.

This covers everything from building solutions, creating art, raising children, and working through tough times.

Independence is the north star for many of us who run from the pain inflicted on us by people in our past. It might seem like the golden ticket if you can outrun the hurt, become self-reliant, and not need anyone.

Maybe, as a path back to loving ourself we need to realize we are fucking amazing on our own and then we can show everyone else.

When you let others see you for the first time, it feels like letting go. The energy you have to output to keep the can-do superstar vibe up all the freaking time is so much better used on the creative work.

Letting go of the singular powerhouse identity is a journey; the length depends on you, but the journey is life, and the path changes when you choose a different way. The way might be the path your people walked, find them.

Create for the ones who hear your message, collaborate with those who've learned your song, and explore the margin of your creative comfort zone through collaboration.

This is the space where it all comes together.

Find your people, the ones who celebrate your victories and who call you when they want to share theirs.

Find the builders, the optimists, the tinkerers, the trailblazers, and the curious.

Trust is built over time. Letting ourselves be vulnerable when we don't know the answer, need to talk it through, or just feel lost is a fast path to figuring out who is good to go through the trenches with and who will have our back and trust us when we need them.

This one goes back to being kind to ourselves.

Cultivating self-empathy builds emotional awareness in ourselves and makes us better collaborators and friends.

Nothing is done alone. We are not built that way.

Staying Curious in Uncertain Times

As I've been reflecting on these times we are in collectively, a pandemic without end—what makes sense is not what is true, what is true is not what is shared, everything is up for question, we need values that come from a deeper place within our Selves.

Our collective knowing of what our species is capable of is deeper than the moment. Creating the work you are born to make will not be easy; you will not set the terms. Instead, you will determine how you react.

Learn your strength enough to believe in it; however long that takes you is right. Once you know, put the armor down.

If you can, before you are so tired, you simply drop it on the floor. You will work on what you love and feel that no one sees you for a long time before one day, you realize you are not walking alone and you aren't as tired either.

Stay curious about your thoughts, your experiences, your passions. Curiosity is what leads us to create the impossible visions of our imagination.

Life is curious, we contain multitudes, expand your aperture, life is happening with every shifting perspective.

Measuring What Matters (Not Just Productivity)

Milestones, deadlines, and clear goals are essential to know where we are going and when we arrive.

We get into trouble when we measure and set objectives to feel productive.

Since most of us can never calibrate our processes by stopping and assessing, we read, listen to, and watch the great thinkers and teachers who craft their own path and learn from them what they do.

If we can give back as we gain, we will all be mentally and spiritually in good shape.

This article contains some game-changing realizations gained along my path as a software engineer on teams building everything from IT solutions to consumer and business software. Structure that supports dynamically is a skill and a tool worth cultivating amid uncertainty.

The Courage to Fight for What's Right

The coolest part of being on a team with other passionate builders is the ability to argue through the solution and the best approach without getting hurt feelings.

The process of productive disagreement is not familiar to most of us in ordinary life.

We are super conditioned to take any argument as personal, a threat, inappropriate, or even disrespectful.

Basically, we are a society (globally) conditioned to be polite followers. This conditioning has been necessary to maintain order in hierarchical systems and has built our world.

Today requires new ways of thinking, departing from the comfortable familiar when discomfort means productive growth, and extreme collaboration across ALL disciplines and diversities.

Consider a small team deeply invested in the project deliverables due before the end of the quarter; the work is important, potentially life-saving. The lead engineer discovers a flaw in the system design, a major security vulnerability. The fix will take months, the stakeholders have committed to the current deadline.

The only correct option is to push the project back. If no one dares to argue for the correct path, a product will ship to hundreds of customers who themselves provide care for thousands.

At an unknown time in the near to mid-term future, the security vulnerability is exploited and tens of thousands of patient records are leaked onto the dark web where their personal information, birthdate, social security numbers, medical history, spouse, number of pregnancies... is bought by malicious actors in an evergrowing sea of online crime.

The original team is fired once the company manages the initial damage of the stock price plummeting and canceled contracts. Know when to argue, raise the flag early and often, one battle has nothing on the war on damage caused by negligence.

Creating Safe Spaces for Dangerous Ideas

Collaboration is a skill, and so is letting go of what is comfortably familiar but not working for you.

Once you start to look for it, you will know the places you are leaning into comfort by default. Default is easy; transformations are hard.

Paradoxically, problem-solving, by its nature, requires discomfort, while ideas are only shared freely when emotional safety is established.

Most of us do not even realize we are operating in a heightened state of anxiety before additional inputs are added.

The first step to emotionally safe teaming is to feel safe enough to take risks with our ideas and to be vulnerable with our team.

We cannot do this if we are harshly judging ourselves without realizing we are even doing it.

How can we make a safe space for our teammates, friends, and family members if we come from a place of comparison and judgment?

Many of us have felt this from our families our whole lives, and it may be the first time we have the opportunity to be creatively vulnerable when we are part of a highly functioning team, whether as software engineers or otherwise.

Once you have felt the good, you see the bad clearly (thanks to my therapist).

Start with you and how you treat yourself when you get something "wrong" or fail to meet your own targets. Do you give yourself grace and find paths to improvement, or do you abuse yourself with judgment and comparison?

Everything good about human communication starts with safety. Safety requires no bullies, no egos, and neutral language, which is challenging to maintain when passion enters the room. We are passionate because we care, which is a positive. Our passion fuels us, but does not drive our actions. When we keep the focus on the value of the work, when we carefully listen, clarify understanding, and get clear on our strong opinions and those we can let go of, we are ready to create space for the hard work that high-functioning teams can do. The work of creating the best is not done by people working in fear.

Numero uno is where everything must begin. Start with you, love yourself, and then you will be able to hold space for others.

The Creative Funnel: From Chaos to Clarity

One of the reasons NoRules is my mantra in tech and creativity is that I know most solutions will require a lot of garbage picking until the shiny object is discovered.

I know, I love metaphors.

In this scenario, garbage picking means throwing ideas at the wall, like pasta noodles (another metaphor for you there).

If you get all precious and defensive about every little idea, you are not going to take risks and try out some garbage. This means you won't make space to learn at the ideation phase, and you will probably commit to a substandard solution sooner than you should have.

If you think there are rules about ideation and creativity, you will get stuck in the editor's office reworking ideas that can't breathe.

Ideas are common, action is unusual.

Think of the phases of creating as a funnel. The widest part, call it top, is where the brainstorming happens. This is a no-critics, anything-goes, no-rules phase. Ideas benefit from a central theme to coalesce around but as I said, no-rules. Get the whiteboard, the post-it notes, and the Sharpies and get creative!

One constraint that keeps a team focused and respects everyone's time is to set a hard time limit and allow people to move around, doodle, and access their creative minds in whichever way feels good to them. Safety is critical for creative flow.

Consider adding a warm-up exercise and a short reflection at the end or later. After the timed brainstorming, curating the ideas into more structured taxonomies will narrow your funnel further.

Leave room at each phase of creation for check-ins, whether your team is 10 or 4, if you are more than one, you should hold daily check-ins or standups, named thus for the brevity intended.

Two questions are sufficient: "What are you working on today, and do you have any blockers?" Blockers are what you might suspect, issues to be dealt with that your teammate knows can help with.

If you never tell her, she will never know. That is it.

Don't be precious or defensive about your ideas. Someone else will write a book about the same idea you have, but they aren't you, so it won't be the same book.

Don't be afraid to try things and learn what works and doesn't work early on.
